"Head-Shaving" Ceremony at Frank Promotes Academic Excellence

Post Date:05/18/2017 12:57 PM

FrankHeadShave_400x244Tempe Elementary teachers are always looking for new and exciting ways to reward their students for going above and beyond. Assistant Principal Matthew Strauss at Frank Elementary seems to have perfected this art and is running with it.

Strauss came up with the idea to shave his full head of hair as an incentive for his students to do well in class back when he was a teacher at Fuller Elementary. The process has gone from Strauss shaving his hair himself at home and surprising his students, to finally allowing high achieving students to take part in shaving his head, which has become an annual ceremony that he’s taken with him to Frank Elementary.

Frank students gathered around outside cheering and chanting as each participant took hold of the clippers one at a time and buzzed through Strauss’ hair until it was completely gone. Students were chosen based on the improvement in their performance in the classroom.

FrankHeadShave2_400x244“The goal is for kids to be the best they can be,” said Strauss. “Even if it helps just one or two kids to try harder, it’s worth it.”

It is clear that the thought of shaving Strauss’ head has motivated more than just one or two kids to try their best. All throughout the year, students continuously try their hardest to earn a position in the end-of-the-year event. Students regularly challenge each other and discuss who will come out on top.

Of course, no event of this magnitude would be complete without a courtyard full of students chanting “Shave it off!” in unison.

Thank you Mr. Strauss for your annual commitment to such a fun event! The Frank community is looking forward to next year!
